Transforming the hearts of man…

Fighting for the Heart of the Few...

A Heart that Fears God

Deuteronomy 5:29 (New International Version)
“Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!”

Wow!  It is no easy task to tackle writing on the fear of the Lord!

According to the Lexicon Transliteration the word fear is derived from the Hebrew word, yare'.  Read this slowly and allow its meaning to settle into your mind, heart and soul: Yare’ means to fear, revere, to stand in awe of, be awed.

Let us turn to scripture to find out what the perfect Author has to say about this topic.

The fear of the LORD is…

Pure and enduring forever.  (Psalm 19:9)
The beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10)
Provides understanding (Psalm 111:10)
The beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7)
Leads to the understanding knowledge of the Holy One (Proverbs 1:7)
A fountain of life (Proverbs 14:27)

I may be wrong, but from what I have personally experienced and from what I read and understand from scripture, the beginning of fear originates with man’s simple obedience.  Reading Genesis 17:9 (NLT):

“Then God said to Abraham, ‘Your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant. You and all your descendants have this continual responsibility.’”

How simple and straight forward is that? Is it more difficult to follow than one might think?    The theme of obedience is a reoccurring topic for me.    Childlike obedience that is!  I honestly believe that those who approach Christ in any other way are limited in what and how much He reveals to them.

I grew up respecting God, but it was not until I stepped out in obedience that respect turned into yare'!  It is an ongoing process, too.  The more I obey, the more He reveals.  The more He reveals the deeper my yare' grows.  It is truly amazing.  I find myself wanting more; more of Him, more knowledge, wisdom and understanding!

Marvin Williams, in Our Daily Bread for January 23, 2009, writes in his study of Isaiah 6:1-10:  “God also enlarged Isaiah’s realization of his own sin (v.5). This led to an expansion of his understanding of God’s complete forgiveness and cleansing (vv.6-7). Only when Isaiah understood the depth of his sin could he appreciate and accept forgiveness and cleansing from God. Finally, his encounter with God led to Isaiah’s declaration of availability and commitment to reach out to others and to help them increase their understanding of God (vv.8-9).”

There is a correlation between us understanding “the depth of my sin” and the deepening of our fear of the LORD.  My prayer for this year is that I would grow in my fear of the LORD!  Without it, it is just head knowledge, intellectual understanding and superficial information.

Please join me in praising and praying for the following:

  1. Please pray for our country, our new president of the United States of America and those in elected offices.
  2. Praise God for providing new ministry opportunities.  I see God’s hand in directing young men to PureHeart.  It is humbling -- and a massive blessing at the same time.
  3. Continue to pray for Brad, Ryan and me.  Pray for our marriages and our children.
  4. Pray for those who partner with us.  Pray for the administration and faculty at OWU.  Pray for the pastors and their staffs at churches in which we attend.
  5. Pray for the upcoming PHM leadership retreat.  Pray for the planning and preparations that are underway.

Sharing from the Heart,

Steve

Fighting for the Heart of the Few...

A Seeking Heart

Deuteronomy 4:29 (NIV)
“But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Happy New Year!  What a start to the year it has been!  I am continuing my writing series on the Heart that I began a year ago. Today we are learning about a seeking heart.

According to the Lexicon, seek is derived from the Hebrew verb darash which mean to resort to, seek, seek with care, enquire, require.

Reading from the King James Version the same passage says, “But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find [him], if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”  Two little words are small in size but significant if we are to capture the meaning of this passage.

Seek the LORD…Find the LORD; twice proceeded by the word if.  First I would conclude that finding the LORD is a choice.  If or If not.  Second, after one makes the choice to seek, to find the LORD requires a heart that is willing to put forth some action.  Remember, the word seek is a verb that requires action.  It is an action, not a passive word.

I have to be honest.  I find man has not changed much from the beginning of time.  I have never felt compelled to read the Bible from cover to cover.  Oh, I tried years ago; but I got to the begets and ended.  However, this year is different.   A prayer partner of PureHeart has a daily ministry of sending out various devotionals to many people, some of you are on her distribution list.  This year for some reason, I've started reading.  From the beginning, man has had a choice.  From the beginning of scripture, some men obey and some disobey.  Again, that ”If” surfaces.  Some choose to obey some choose to disobey.    I find it very interesting that regardless of man's choice--whether they chose to actively seek God or not—they all want(ed) the LORD's favor and blessing.  Not much has changed, has it?

This passage instructs that our seeking should be with all our heart.  This word is derived from the Hebrew transliteration lebab.  This is a masculine noun that means the inner man, mind, will, heart, soul and understanding.  How much of our inner man, mind, will, heart, soul and understanding do we put into seeking the LORD?  That sounds very intense to me.  According to the sermon notes from Chuck Smith, seeking God requires us to put some blood and passion into it.  That description is very clear.

IF  - It is a choice.
Seek - Resort to, seek, seek with care, enquire, require.
Heart - The inner man, mind, will, heart, soul and understanding
Find the LORD

Over the Christmas holiday I read a book titled “Grace Awakening” by Charles Swindoll. In it he shares that every heart desires to be free.  That freedom comes by doing exactly as this passage instructs!  We've got to be men and women who will seek the Lord with blood, sweat and tears. When we do that, we will find Him.  That is my prayer for 2009, that we would have a renewed desire to choose to seek Him!

Join with me praising and praying for the following:
  1. Praise God for the new year, new beginnings.  I sense 2009 will be a year of exciting things to come for me, my family and for PureHeart Ministries.
  2. I praise God for each of you.  Prayer has been a priority for PureHeart from the beginning.  Your prayers are powerful.  We would not be where we are today without each of you.
  3. I have been amazing and blessed by the young men who are partnering with PHM.  I praise God for them.
  4. Continue to pray for Brad, Ryan and me.  Pray for our marriages and our children.
  5. Pray for God’s direction for PHM.  Pray and ask God to guide us and direct us in areas concerning the ministry and it’s direction and focus.
  6. Pray for the PHM team.  We are planning a leadership retreat.  This is something I’ve wanted to do for the past few years.

Transforming the hearts of man…

Fighting for the Heart of the Few......

 A Forgetful Heart

 Deuteronomy 4:9 (New International Version)
“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

This week we continue on our journey to understand the human heart, and we learn that the heart can forget what God has done if we take our eyes and minds off of Him.

Two things amaze me when I ponder this passage.  First, God’s holy word is absolutely amazing and timeless.  Second, these people had something we do not have; the privilege of seeing God move physically among them! They, or their parents or grandparents, had seen the pillar of cloud in the day and fire in the night. They had seen the Jordan River stop and had walked through on dry ground! How could their faith ever grow stale after seeing such miracles? Simple…they let the memories fade.

I think the final pieces of God’s creation, first man and then woman, are often one of God’s greatest joys and one of His greatest sources of disappointment, all in one.  Oh, how things have not changed; another reminder why we must be intentional in our pursuit of God and living every second of every day in full surrender and in complete obedience.

Forget and Not Slip
One of the games we used to play in youth group was called Secret, I think.  It has been years but the analogy clearly explains what has and does happen.

Basically, you whisper a short sentence in the ear of the person to your right.  That same sentence is passed from one person to another.  You would be surprised just how different it gets communicated by the time it reaches back to the beginning.  Something is lost in the translation.

I once saw a demonstration of this same principal played out on stage at an ORU chapel service.  The speaker pulled twelve volunteers up on stage to represent the various generations that have gone on before us. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and so on…  They were given a large box containing various items a college student would need.  They were asked to take what they wanted and pass the box to the next person, representing the next generation.  By the time the box reached the end of the row, it had nothing left in it but a stick of deodorant!

Now, think of the “sentence” in the Secret game and the “box of items” in the chapel illustration as God’s truths.  Words can be lost, dropped and changed.  The blessings and truths found in the box can be picked over and the full blessings the box contained can be missed by those further down the line.

And how easily the heart and mind can let truths slip and soon become forgotten if they are not as the above scripture says, “Taught to your children and your children’s children.”  (Steve’s translation)

Why is this?
I am no expert on this but I have observed some things in life that might help answer that question.

First, you must be proactive in this teaching and understand the eternal value of doing so.  It is easy to be short sighted.  I write from personal experience.  I find it easy to be complacent and not take the personal responsibility to do my teaching.

Second, people cherry pick the scripture to meet their belief system instead of forming a belief system based on all Scriptures.

I want to close with a devotional I recently received.  I know that if we learn from it we will be less inclined to forget truth and prevent it from slipping from our hearts.  See if you agree.

          Profitable Tuesday, December 02, 2008

      • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

All Scripture is profitable! Knowing this, we cheat ourselves when we do not access every book, every truth, every verse, and every page of our Bibles for the promises and commands God has for us. Because every verse of Scripture is inspired by God and gainful to us, we should not pick and choose which verses we will read and study. We should not claim verses we like and ignore those that convict us! If we are to become mature disciples of Jesus, we must allow every Scripture to speak to us and teach us what God desires us to learn. Scripture enables us to evaluate the soundness of doctrines that are being taught. Scripture ought to be the basis for any reproof or correction we bring to another.

If you are not firmly grounded in God’s Word, you will be bombarded with an assortment of doctrines, lifestyles, and behaviors and you will have no means to evaluate whether or not they are of God. You cannot develop a righteous life apart from God’s Word. Righteousness must be cultivated. As you fill your mind with the words of God, and as you obey His instructions, He will guide you in the ways of righteousness. Scripture will equip you for any good work God calls you to do. If you feel inadequate for a task God has given you, search the Scriptures, for within them you will find the wisdom you need to carry out His assignment. Allow the Word of God to permeate, guide, and enrich your life.
